This is from Dan’s daughter.
Hello everyone! This is Kalee, Dan’s daughter. As many of you know, back in 2020 we raised some money for him after he was admitted to the ICU with COVID. Since then, his health has significantly declined and he is currently going through the process of being evaluated for a lung transplant. During that, he decided to downsize a bit and sell his home- the maintenance had become too much and he needed something more manageable. Since his shop had been located at his home, a family friend offered to loan him a portion of their shop space and he moved his shop in with them in the fall of 2024, setting up in a corner of Fabry Pipe Organs.
On February 24th 2025, in the early morning hours, Fabry’s shop burned down after a truck that was parked on the property caught fire and it spread to the roof of the building. The building was ultimately deemed a total loss. Not only did Fabry’s, a family business that’s been operating since 1955, lose their shop, but my dad’s business of 40 years was lost as well. Any materials or tools that weren’t damaged by smoke or flames were waterlogged and left in uncontrolled temps, rendering them unusable.
We’re so fortunate that no one was hurt or killed. The businesses were both insured, but that process could be long and difficult and they ultimately don’t know what they’ll get back or when. In the meantime, both my dad and the Fabrys are trying to figure out their next steps and get some kind of shop space up and running so they can resume business.
The stress of losing his life’s work exacerbated a pre-existing heart issue and he ended up in the hospital the same evening of the fire. He’s since been released, but it seems he just genuinely can’t catch a break. Every time he starts to get back up on his feet, something else comes along and knocks him down again.
We appreciate everyone’s continued support and generosity. My dad has been crafting incredible guitars for 40 years, as well as teaching music and repairing/building other instruments. His knowledge and skill are unmatched and he is a pillar to the arts community. His contributions to music and education are a huge part of his legacy and he needs the opportunity to continue his work.
